【Finished】Kyoto Student Festival Regional Revitalization Project Started! The first event will be held on Saturday, May 21 in Fushimi!

What is a Regional Revitalization Project?

Students from Kyoto, who transcend the boundaries of universities, form an executive committee and engage in daily activities with the aim of disseminating “Kyoto as a student city” to society, further revitalizing the Kyoto area, and creating new attractions in collaboration with the business community, the government, the local community, and the university.
In fiscal 2016, under the title of “Regional Revitalization Project,” we solicited organizations (partners) that can work hand in hand with students, and selected partners. Together with these organizations, we will carry out various projects to realize the revitalization of each region of Kyoto. By connecting them to the main festival of the Kyoto Student Festival (scheduled to be held on October 9), which is the culmination of these festivals, we aim to become a festival that is more rooted in the community and loved by the people of Kyoto while demonstrating the student’s personality.
The first regional revitalization project will be held on Saturday, May 21 at Fushimi Port Park and Fushimi Otesuji Shopping Street. In addition to the performance of the Kyoto Student Festival’s original creative dance “Kyo Flame Fudeit“, there will be a fair-day project in cooperation with the local organization “Oyaji-no-kai”, and a mini train in collaboration with the Keihan Railway will appear Mr./Ms. the event. You can enjoy interaction across generations.
The University Consortium Kyoto has set the goal of “student growth” in such daily activities, and is providing support aimed at “student independence” that allows students to think and act on their own, and supports the festival in October so that what has been accumulated in the course of activities since the establishment of the executive committee can be maximized. Please come and give encouragement to the executive committee.

The Tohoku Project of the 14th Kyoto Student Festival Executive Committee has begun!

What is the Tohoku Project?

Inauguration and transition of the project

touhokulogoIn 2013, two years after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, most of the students in Kyoto, including the Kyoto Student Festival Executive Committee, had not yet seen the actual situation in Tohoku with their own eyes. This project was launched with the desire to see and feel this unprecedented disaster by going directly to the disaster area, and to think about what they can do.
Last year, we incorporated a tour of the disaster-stricken area and a seminar from the Disaster Volunteer Center into the itinerary, and provided an opportunity to learn about the Great Japan Earthquake itself, and in order to disseminate this information to everyone Mr./Ms.in the Kyoto area, we held a report on the results of the disaster, creating an opportunity to reflect on and think about the disaster together with the Mr./Ms. of Kyoto.
tohoku1

Initiatives in Fiscal 2016

In order to bring many smiles and excitement to the local people, this visit will focus on the odori project that is popular with the local people (“Kyo Flame Fude It!” performance and exchange). After the visit, the Kyoto Student Festival Executive Committee will hold debriefing sessions and projects related to disaster prevention not only for the Kyoto Student Festival Executive Committee and its related parties, but also for the people of the Kyoto area, so that more people will have an opportunity to remember the Great Japan Earthquake, and the Kyoto Student Festival Executive Committee will prevent the earthquake from fading into society in the Kyoto area and raise awareness of disaster prevention.
In addition, we will conduct fundraising activities for the Kumamoto earthquake out of a desire to support Mr./Ms. who were affected by the Kumamoto earthquake that occurred in April 2016. We aim to connect the circle of support for those affected by the Kumamoto earthquake from Tohoku to Kumamoto via Kyoto, and to raise awareness of disaster prevention in the Kyoto area.

Three Significance of the Project

    1. We will deliver the energy and smiles of Kyoto students directly to the local people, and strive for continuous emotional exchange with Kyoto students.
    2. By directly seeing, hearing, and feeling the Great East Japan Earthquake on site, we will lead to the personal growth of Kyoto students.
    3. By disseminating what we felt and learned in Tohoku in Kyoto, we will prevent the disaster from fading.

Taking advantage of the “town area” on the first day and the interaction with local people, in the workshop on the second day, through work to draw the shape of Oe and to think about a date plan, “What would be nice to have in Oe, what is wonderful now?” We came up with ideas for town development.

The members of the community development council who participated in the workshop said, “I want to receive ideas and opinions that I have never thought of and make the most of them,” and “I want to hear the voices of high school students more and more.” I received the impression.

DSC_0164 DSC_0219

A high school student who experienced interaction with local people at this workshop said, “I was thinking that if I went to university, I wouldn’t come back to my hometown, but as I listened to today’s story and learned about the various merits, I realized that it is not easy to divide.” I was able to gain a regional and social perspective for future planning.

In addition, when I saw the university students involved as facilitators, I felt that my desire to go to university was strengthened. I was inspired.

② DSC_0230

The university students who participated in the event said, “If you take an interest in the area, the local people will do their best to return the favor. That’s what I learned.

The Kyoto High School-University Collaborative Research Council conducted a questionnaire survey of the participants of this workshop and summarized the extent to which it influenced the skill development of high school and university students, as well as the impact on cultivating social and regional perspectives.

Implementation Report

“High school students will also become teachers!? With an emphasis on “high school students talking,” we challenged participants to compose their own life histories in order to gain the strength to take a step forward toward the future of the participants and the future of Kumihama.

Life story

The high school students’ stories about the future based on past events and current experiences were full of pride and hope for the Kumihama area. In this way, from the stories of high school students who were affectionate for the Kumihama area, the university students felt that “the brightness of high school students is unique to what they want to do,” and the local people left the impression that “I felt that I should do my best by listening to the solid opinions of the high school students.”

⑦

This workshop was planned and run by 15 university students.

① ②

3 4

Attracted by the keywords “community,” “education,” and “high school students,” the university students gathered at a training camp in Kumihama from the day before and organized a workshop for the day. Most of the university students were new to each other that day, but they showed great team strength and leadership skills in order to achieve the goals they had set.

On the other hand, the high school students realized the importance of the ability to step forward, saying, “I wanted to move forward without giving up” and “I want to be like the university students who came today” by asking university students and local people about their dreams and hopes.⑤ ⑥

We were able to create such a place for “mutual learning” without the cooperation of the local community, who listened carefully to the high school students and warmly watched the activities of the university students. “It makes me happy when I hear young people say, ‘I want to go back to my hometown,’ and I want to do my best to connect that to a concrete vision.” As the saying goes, it was also a place for local people to “learn from each other”.

The Kyoto High School-University Collaborative Research Council conducted a questionnaire survey of the participants of this workshop and summarized the extent to which it influenced the skill development of high school and university students, as well as the impact on cultivating social and regional perspectives.

Kyoto’s cultural heritage is famous for its shrines and temples, such as Heian Jingu Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple, but we must never forget that the common people living in Kyoto cherish the shrines and Mr./Ms. in each town. It is the Shunseisha that enshrines Fujiwara Toshinari. The Mr./Ms. of the Machikado gods and the Buddha Mr./Ms. are small and nameless, but they have a history of being protected by the townspeople for generations. Isn’t this the underlying strength of Kyoto’s culture?

How do we design the “first step of learning” at university?
– Thinking about mechanisms to motivate continuous learning –

We will examine how to design a four-year continuous learning program in the realization of undergraduate education as a curriculum and how to take the first step in this process, from the perspective of first-year education and from the perspective of education connected to regular curriculum.
We will provide information on the background, implementation contents, evaluations, and issues of unique initiatives from the above perspectives, and we will provide an opportunity to get hints on how the “first step of learning” should be designed for participants at the university.
