【Thank you for the event】Report on the 14th Kyoto Student Festival ~ Kyoto Intercollegiate Festa 2016~

Thank you for holding the event

The 14th Kyoto Student Festival was successfully held on Sunday, October 9, thanks to everyone’s support and cooperation. We were worried about the weather on the day of the event, but perhaps because of the enthusiasm of the students on the executive committee, the rain stopped before 11:00 a.m., and the sun shone in the afternoon. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who came to the festival and to all those who have made efforts in various fields to hold this festival.

Event Report

The 14th Kyoto Student Festival was planned with the aim of providing as many students as possible with a place and opportunity to “fully demonstrate the potential of students,” which is the activity philosophy of the Kyoto Student Festival. In particular, this year’s festival aims to realize a “festival in which people can participate proactively” by inviting more students from various fields, including artistic fields such as fashion and art, who have not participated in the festival so far, to participate in the festival, and to contribute to the revitalization of the community by disseminating it as an attraction of Kyoto. By expanding the range of genres in this way, we planned the project with the goal of creating a unique student culture for the festival while increasing the number of collaborators, and eventually becoming the “Four Great Festivals of Kyoto” on a par with the three major festivals in Kyoto.

We had a retrospective meeting for Marutoku in Amino.

On Saturday, October 8th, we held a “review meeting” at Campus Plaza Kyoto.
The participants were 10 people, including university students who planned and ran the “Marutoku (Let’s make Amino, a city of the sea) a town that will definitely come back” held at Amino High School on Thursday, September 29 and Friday, September 30.
We looked back on the project in Amino and the preparations leading up to the day of the event, including images, and exchanged opinions on how to make the project even better after October.

Did you receive a message for high school students?

The message that the university team wanted to convey to the high school students through this project was “to convey flexible and broad-minded values.” Did you get this feeling across?
The following is an excerpt from a post-survey of high school students.
◆ I wanted to know more about various things.
◆ I was only thinking about staying in my hometown, but I wanted to do what I could for my hometown.
◆After getting a job in Tango, I wanted to do activities to let Mr./Ms. know about Tango.

Until the message arrives…

The university student team had several meetings in advance in the process of creating the concept, content, and time schedule for this project. Even so, we repeated detailed meetings until the last minute, and in order to make it better, we emphasized the sharing of “information” and “feelings” among all members of the team.
img_4847The results are presented from the remarks of university students at the retrospective meeting.
◆ “A high school student who wants to be a pastry chef said, “It’s good to be a pastry chef in Amino.”
◆ In the game with peaks and valleys in life, the good response of the high school students showed that they made time to think about connections, not just simulations.
◆ (Although it was group work), it was very meaningful to make time to see the works of other groups.
◆ I was happy to see that the local members of society who participated were impressed by the perspectives of the high school students.
◆ I was impressed by my high school teacher, who said, “I’m more excited than usual.”
◆ High school students gave presentations that were both voluntary and exciting.

Next up, Maruttoku in Suchi

At the retrospective meeting, a team of university students who planned and managed the “Maruttoku in Suchi (Highland is a Campus!: Let’s Find the Wonders of Su High School Students and Kyotamba)” tried out an icebreaker game. In addition, we deepened our awareness of the importance of sharing “information” and “feelings,” which were important points of the Amino project.

Kyoto Student Festival Project Overview

Students from Kyoto, who transcend the boundaries of universities, form an executive committee and engage in daily activities with the aim of disseminating “Kyoto as a student city” to society, further revitalizing the Kyoto area, and creating new attractions in collaboration with the business community, the government, the local community, and the university.
After a variety of community exchange activities throughout the year, such as the promotion of the original creative odori “Kyoen Sodefure!” and water sprinkling activities, a grand festival is held every October as the culmination of these activities.
The University Consortium Kyoto has set the goal of “student growth” in the daily activities of the Student Executive Committee, and is providing support aimed at “student independence” that allows students to think and act on their own, and supports the implementation of what has been accumulated in the course of activities since the establishment of the Executive Committee so that it can be maximized at the main festival in October.

The curry recipe was developed with the cooperation of Associate Professor Semiko Yoshino of the Department of Food and Nutrition, Faculty of Home Economics, Kyoto Women’s University.
It is a curry made with Kyoto ingredients such as Fushimi chili peppers, Kyoto ginseng, and white miso as a secret ingredient. The spiciness is moderate, and the taste is perfect for junior high and high school students.

What is the Kyoto Student Public Relations Department?

(1) Activities
With the aim of making junior high and high school students nationwide want to study at a university in Kyoto and live a student life in Kyoto, university students studying in Kyoto gather to plan, interview, photograph, and create articles from the student’s point of view.

《Management media》Website “Kotokare” https://kotocollege.jp/

(2) Background of establishment
Kyoto City is home to 38 universities and junior colleges, and approximately 150,000 students, or 10% of the population, are a “university town and student town.” However, as the number of 18-year-olds declines over the long term and competition among universities is expected to intensify further, it is necessary to actively disseminate the appeal of Kyoto as a “university city and student city” to junior high and high school students who will become university students in the future.
Therefore, as a new initiative in the Heisei 27 academic year in collaboration with Kyoto City and the University Consortium Kyoto, we have established the “Kyoto Student Public Relations Department” to disseminate to junior high and high school students nationwide from the perspective of students the “real charm of Kyoto” that university students studying in Kyoto experience while living their student lives.

Research is underway ~2016 University Consortium Kyoto Designated Research Projects~

Since 2015, the University Consortium Kyoto (hereinafter referred to as the “Foundation”) has established designated research topics and conducted research by researchers in specialized fields with the aim of contributing to the review and improvement of the Foundation’s projects, new development and advancement, and the provision of information to the Foundation’s member universities.

In fiscal 2016, the research group of Associate Professor Satoshi Yoshida of the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University (Kyoto University, Doshisha University, and Kyoto Sangyo University) conducted research on the following topics twice a month under the theme of “Establishment of a Database of Accessibility and Reasonable Accommodations for the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities at Universities: Toward the Establishment of a Collaborative Organization for the Office of Support for Students with Disabilities.” (Click here for details of the 2016 Foundation-designated research project)

Mr./Ms. of the research group From left to right: Mr./Ms. Inoue of Kyoto Sangyo University, Prof. Yoshida, Representative: Prof. Sekine of Doshisha University Front from left: Mr./Ms. Tsuchihashi of Doshisha University, research collaborator Mr./Ms. Yamamoto, Prof. Iwakuma of Kyoto University

“At the 9/21 workshop” From the back left, Mr. Mr./Ms. Inoue of Kyoto Sangyo University, Prof. Yoshida, Representative Prof. Sekine of Doshisha University Front left from Mr./Ms. Tsuchihashi of Doshisha University, research collaborator Mr./Ms. Yamamoto, Prof. Iwakuma of Kyoto University (Prof. Murata of Kyoto University is also participating as a member of the study group)

1. Creation of a database of how students with disabilities access university facilities

We have built a system that can easily investigate information on access and barriers in lecture halls and common areas of school buildings, and can display a list of them using icons. On September 12, we conducted a survey on access and barriers at a total of more than 300 locations, including lecture rooms in six buildings and nine buildings used for university-wide courses at Kyoto University, as well as common areas in the school building. We are planning to conduct a survey at Doshisha University from October.

2. “Visualization” of the know-how of the Support Office for Students with Disabilities

According to the coordinator, who has been in charge of support for students with disabilities since the establishment of the Support Office, it was found that the skills behind the work, such as “methods for understanding and enlightening related faculty and staff across departments” and “reconstruction of support based on failures,” are the key points of support for students with disabilities. Therefore, we are aiming to organize the essential tasks of the coordinator and the annual work from the establishment of the support office to the establishment of the support office, and to visualize the tacit knowledge that is the key point.

3. Collection and database of building renovation cases to support students with disabilities

From the discussions of the study group, we came to understand that it would be more effective to record the process of involvement in the renovation rather than showing many examples of building renovation to Mr./Ms.. Therefore, the key to how to get involved in the renovation work of the relevant departments
1) Support from the design stage before renovation
2) Support at the last stage of construction
3) Support for renovation immediately after completion of construction
Based on these examples, we decided to present important points. In 3), the details of the barrier-free renovation (installation of a ramp) at Kyoto University were examined and implemented by students using wheelchairs, student support coordinators for students with disabilities, facility staff, and academic affairs personnel.

4. Exploratory qualitative research on the structuring of support know-how of support coordinators for students with disabilities and the perspectives of students with disabilities regarding support

Coordinators’ interviews with students with disabilities will be investigated through ethnography and conversation research, and support skills will be structured. In addition, Doshisha University and Kyoto University have started a research project to exploratory interviews with students with disabilities about their needs for support and their perspectives on support (approved by the Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine).

The following is an example of a survey conducted on September 12 at the Yoshida Minami Campus of Kyoto University related to “1 Creation of a database of how students with disabilities access university facilities.” With the cooperation of students from Kyoto University, we conducted a survey on the accessibility of buildings.

Guidance on the survey by Associate Professor Yoshida Mr./Ms. students are investigating the steps of the building, the size of the elevator, the presence or absence of mirrors, etc

We plan to proceed with the above research by the results report meeting in March. Please look forward to the progress of future research and research.

Recruitment of Research Group for “Multifaceted Municipal Administration Research Project Utilizing ‘University Knowledge'”

~Revitalization of Kyoto through the Utilization of Culture
We are looking for research groups that analyze and consider from multiple perspectives! ~

In order to make the most of Kyoto’s “university knowledge” in Kyoto City’s policies and to strengthen efforts to solve the problems of city government, the University Consortium Kyoto will conduct a new “Multifaceted Municipal Administration Research Project Utilizing ‘University Knowledge'” in collaboration with Kyoto City from this fiscal year.

Specifically, we will establish a research group consisting of multiple units that study each field of research on the research theme designated by Kyoto City, and analyze and discuss it from multiple perspectives.

Ultimately, the results of the research will be compiled into a report and linked to the policies of Kyoto City, which will be utilized in solving issues in the city government and will be disseminated nationwide as a Kyoto model.

Therefore, we would like to inform you that we are recruiting research groups as follows.

We will study methods for the protection and utilization of cultural properties in terms of both hardware and software, the promotion of traditional culture, and the creation of new value, and mutually enhancing culture and tourism.

(2) Industry and Culture ~New Manufacturing with Impact through Culture~ [Unit 2]

In addition to making use of new cultures that have attracted international attention in recent years, such as content such as video and anime and Japan’s food culture registered as an intangible cultural heritage, we will further expand the efforts of traditional industries and manufacturing cultures to further expand and study the possibility of industrial promotion through culture.

(3) Life and Culture~Inheritance and Development of the Culture of Living in Japan~【Unit 3】

We value the culture of Japan life, including food, clothing, and housing, and the spirit of coexistence with the local community and nature behind it, and research methods to convey its appeal while creating.

(4) Urban Development and Culture ~ Culture and Art are Detonators of Regional Revitalization ~ [Unit 4]

In urban development and regional revitalization, we will research methods that incorporate cultural perspectives, promote the further fusion of cultures from traditional (classical) culture to contemporary art, and lead to the creation of new urban value.

【Request for cooperation】We are looking for individual supporters of the Kyoto International Student Film Festival!

Please support a student film festival!

The Kyoto International Student Film Festival is the largest international student film festival in Japan, planned and operated mainly by university students from the Kansai region, mainly in Kyoto, and is now in its 19th year. The purpose of this program is to gather independent films produced by students from all over the world, review them by the executive committee, and create opportunities for students to screen them, and to discover human resources and talents who will lead the future of filmmakers.
Historically, Kyoto is a “movie town” that still inherits the cultural heritage of the early days of Japan cinema, and it is also a “university town and student town” where students account for 10% of the population of Kyoto City. The festival aims to revitalize Kyoto by creating a place for international exchange and mutual understanding by discovering and introducing talents who can add new fields to cinema from among the many possibilities of films from around the world.
The operation of the Kyoto International Student Film Festival is made possible by the warm support and cooperation of many people, including sponsoring companies. We are currently looking for people who agree with our student activities as “individual supporters”. The donation will be used to cover the activities of the Kyoto International Student Film Festival. We would like to ask for your support in making the Kyoto International Student Film Festival even better.
* We are still looking for sponsors. For details, please contact the Kyoto International Student Film Festival Executive Committee.
