As the globalization of higher education accelerates, with the expansion of support for international students and the promotion of collaborative projects with overseas universities, the time has come when English language proficiency is an essential basic skill for university faculty and staff.
The University Consortium Kyoto’s training program is aimed at improving the English language proficiency of faculty and staff at member schools to meet the needs of this era, as well as raising their awareness of future language learning.

Let’s talk about the appeal of your university in simple English!

Speaker: Mr. Louis Isidore Bhutto

Assuming a campus tour for foreign visitors and international students, students will learn basic greetings, guidance of facilities, and interactions on campus through role-playing and pair work. The content is also useful for instructing students in charge of campus tours.

Active Learning in Practice: Instructing Subjects Using
English as a Medium of Instruction

Lecturer: Mikako Nishikawa, Kyoto University

This course is mainly aimed at teachers. It is a
flipped classroom “exercise-style” course where teachers take the initiative in mock lessons and ICT, such as practicing interactive lessons with instructions in English and participatory lessons based on flipped classroom materials. We would also like to invite teachers who are worried about teaching in English to participate.

Chinese Cultural Understanding Training

Lecturer: Wang Lin

With more than half of the international students being Chinese, you will learn how to facilitate communication by understanding the cultural differences between China and Japan. This course will provide a systematic view of Chinese culture and an understanding of the differences between Japan and China. You will also learn simple greetings in Chinese.

Cross-cultural Manners and English Communication in Higher Education

Lecturer: Mikako Nishikawa, Kyoto University

For staff members involved in international education-related work at universities. Mannerisms and communication methods vary greatly depending on culture. In this course, in order to respond to the increasing number of international students and foreign researchers, students will deepen their understanding of cultural diversity, communication styles, business etiquette, etc. Through role-playing and PBL (problem-based exercises) in various settings, we aim to improve English communication skills.

Email Training

Speaker: Owen Mark Kozlowski

You will learn basic English email writing structures and phrases, and learn the format, tone, style, and syntax for various situations such as requests, confirmations, refusals, announcements, and urgings. You will also learn conversation practice for when you meet in person after emailing.

Everyday Communication

Speaker: Owen Mark Kozlowski

Students will learn practical English communication techniques for various situations (formal/informal, appropriate tone and word choice, etc.) such as when dealing with international students, teachers, and guests from overseas.

Faculty and staff of consortium member universities: 2,500 yen per class (price revised from last year!)
Faculty and staff of non-consortium member universities: 7,000 yen per class
