Business Overview

The Kyoto International Student Film Festival is the largest international student film festival in Japan, planned and operated mainly by university students from the Kansai region centered on Kyoto. The aim is to collect independent films produced by students from all over the world and discover the talents and talents who will lead the future of cinema.
Historically, Kyoto is a “movie town” that still inherits the cultural heritage of the early days of Japan cinema, and it is also a “university town and student town” where students account for 10% of the population of Kyoto City. The festival aims to contribute to the revitalization of Kyoto and the region by creating a place for international exchange and mutual understanding by discovering and introducing talents who can add new fields to cinema from among the many possibilities of works from around the world.

(Director, Pia Film Festival (PFF))

After a wide range of experience in book editing, film and video production, publicity, and event planning, he participated in the UK90 British Film Festival held as part of the Pia Film Festival (PFF) in 1990, where he was in charge of a feature on Monty Python. At the same time, he served as the programming director of the Young Cinema section of the Southeast Asian Film Festival hosted by the Japan Foundation ASEAN Cultural Center, promoting exchanges with young filmmakers from around the world. In 1992, he became PFF’s first general director. Since then, he has focused on introducing PFF-related films and other Japan films overseas. As a juror, he has participated in various international film festivals such as the Hawaii International Film Festival, the Hong Kong International Film Festival, Tokyo Filmex, and the Tokyo International Film Festival. He contributes to international exchange through film.

Rikiya Imaizumi
(Film Director)

Born in 1981. Born in Fukushima Prefecture. Film director. He is known for his delicate and unique style of work on the theme of everyday relationships and love.
He began making independent films while studying at the Faculty of Design, Nagoya City University. After graduating, he attended the Yoshimoto Academy of Performing Arts NSC in Osaka, and then moved to Tokyo to resume filmmaking at the New Cinema Workshop, a film school.
He made his debut as a commercial film director with “Occasional Movie” (2010). “Sad Tea” (2014) and “Goodbye to Boring Days” (2017) were selected for the Japan Film Splash section of the Tokyo International Film Festival. He has worked on a number of romantic films such as “I Don’t Know, Two” (2016) and “Bread and Bus and the Second Hatskoi” (2018), and “Ai ga Nanda” (2019), based on the original story by Mitsuyo Tsunoda, also became a hot topic. Other films directed include “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” (2019), “HIS” (2020), “On the Street” (2021), “At the Window” (2022), “Chihiro-san” (2023), and “Takagi-san who is good at teasing” (2024).

After graduating from Japan University’s Faculty of Art, he joined Madhouse Co., Ltd.
He gained experience directing and directing from his time at the company, and became independent as a freelancer.
He was involved as a director in the movie version of “Bleach” (2010) and “Attack on Titan” (2013).
In 2013, he wrote, wrote, and directed Death Parade, which caught the attention of the producers of Detective Conan, and he was hired as the director of Detective Conan: Zero’s Enforcer (2018).
In 2023, he directed “Detective Conan: The Shadow of the Black Iron” and directed “BLUE GIANT” as well as sound director. Implementation Report

The 27th edition of the Kyoto International Student Film Festival was held at the Film Theater of the Museum of Kyoto for four days from Thursday, February 6 to Sunday, February 9, 2025. This year, there were a total of 511 entries, 134 from Japan and 377 from overseas, and 16 films were selected by the executive committee composed of students.
At the opening ceremony on the 6th, a greeting was read on behalf of the organizers by Mr. Ohara, President of the University Consortium Kyoto, followed by greetings by Mr. Yasuto Yura, Chairman of the Kyoto International Student Film Festival Planning Committee, and Mr. Masaki Nagata, Chairman of the Executive Committee. At the award ceremony on the final day, the Grand Prix, Second Grand Prix, the Final Jury Prize in honor of this year’s final jury members, Keiko Araki (Director of Pia Film Festival), Rikiya Imaizumi, and Yuzuru Tachikawa, and the Executive Committee Award selected by the Executive Committee, were announced.
Finally, with the closing remarks by Executive Committee Chairman Nagata, the 27th Kyoto International Student Film Festival came to a close.

“Memory Screen” (Youth Film Screening)
Date: Saturday, October 19, 2024
Venue: Former Kyoto Municipal Anyeong Elementary School Gymnasium

Participating Executive Committee Members: 18
Content: We invited filmmaker and YouTuber Kiyoshi Kakinuma as a guest and held a screening of a youth film at the gymnasium of the former Kyoto Municipal Anyeong Elementary School. Four films with the theme of youth were screened from past films. Networking events and talk sessions were held, and visitors commented that they were able to enjoy the film from a new perspective.

【Collaborative Planning】

Kyoto Student Festival Film Festival Booth
Date: Sunday, October 13, 2024
Venue: Heian Jingu Shrine / Okazaki Promenade area
Content: We set up a booth at the Okazaki Ground at the Kyoto Student Festival to promote the Kyoto International Student Film Festival.
We exhibited posters from past festivals and panels introducing this year’s final jury, and also played games for children to promote the festival to a wide range of people. We also made efforts to raise awareness of pre-events and film history by distributing flyers.


Last year’s Grand Prize and Second Prize Screening
Date: Saturday, October 19, 2024 and Sunday, October 20, 2024
Venue: In front of Kyoto City Hall
Details: Last year’s Grand Prix (Dream of a Movie) and the Second Prize (PARK Hobeom’s Life of Dongwoo) were screened at the Kyoto Cinema Square (Kyoto Film Awards) held over two days. On both days, members of the executive committee took the stage to promote the festival.


Last year’s winning film was screened at the film screening project “SHINPA Vol.17”
Date: Sunday, December 15, 2024
Place: LOFT9Shibuya
Contents: At SHINPA vol.17, last year’s winner, “The Steak” directed by Kiarash Dadgar, was screened. Two members of the executive committee took the stage to introduce the films and convey the appeal of the film festival.

Kyoto University Hospital Video Distribution
Continuing from last year, we collaborated with Kyoto University Hospital to distribute past winning works from monitors in each inpatient bed.

Screening of “Theme Song Performance Recording Project”
Date: Thursday, February 6, 2025
Venue: The Museum of Kyoto Film Theater
Content: The theme song of the film festival “Youth” composed by Jung In-young was performed by classical musicians (Ms. Hisako Tamiya on piano, Ms. Mao Kawamura on violin, Ms. Momiji Kitagawa on viola, and Mr. Yosuke Shimizu on cello), and a documentary video recording of the performance was screened at the opening ceremony of the festival.
