Business Overview
By utilizing the creative and academic research results of university researchers in Kyoto City’s policies and projects, we aim to return the knowledge of university research to the local community and society. From the planning stage, researchers and the department in charge of Kyoto City have been working together to promote research, and we are aiming to form a network based on the surveys and research of this project by holding results report meetings to widely disseminate and share the results of this research, as well as exchange meetings between researchers, citizens, city officials, students, etc.
This project ended in fiscal 2015.

Designated Projects (3)
Designated Project 1: Research on sustainable “food management” that realizes the employment of people with disabilities
theme |
Research on sustainable “food management” to realize the employment of people with disabilities |
Principal Investigator |
Kimihisa Furumura (Associate Professor, Faculty of Business Administration, Kyoto Sangyo University) |
Outline of Research |
(Purpose of the study)
In addition to theoretical research, we aim to promote the employment of people with disabilities in the field of food in Kyoto City through practical research on the employment of people with disabilities by companies, which has not functioned adequately until now.
(Contents of the research)
(1) Prior research surveys and case studies: Conducted a variety of case studies with multiple companies and social welfare councils that have a track record of employing people with disabilities in the food industry.
(2) Action Research: With the support of businesses with a proven track record in food management, KYOCA conducts action research on restaurants that employ people with disabilities and create products that are acceptable to general consumers.
(3) Hold lectures based on (1) and (2) to transfer know-how on the employment of people with disabilities to businesses in Kyoto City. |

Designated Project 2: Research on the use of perceptual psychology in the improvement of the bicycle riding environment
theme |
A Study on the Utilization of Perceptual Psychology in the Improvement of Bicycle Riding Environment |
Principal Investigator |
Akika Kitaoka (Professor, Faculty of Letters, Ritsumeikan University) |
Outline of Research |
(Purpose of the study)
In addition to alleviating the fear of riding a bicycle on the roadway, we will conduct design development research using methods of perceptual psychology (optical illusions, trompe l’oeil, etc.) and cognitive psychology in order to guide bicycles in a more natural way by observing traffic rules, such as preventing wrong-way riding and observing stop signs.
(Contents of the research)
(1) In order to prevent wrong-way driving, develop a design that can be recognized as wrong-way driving at a glance when driving in the wrong direction, and present it on the road surface or in an appropriate place.
(2) In order to promote the suspension of the bicycle, we will develop an image hump from the perspective of the bicycle and install it immediately before the stop or in an appropriate place.
(3) In order to reduce the fear of driving on the roadway, we developed and installed a design that would immediately make it clear to the driver that a part of the roadway is used for bicycles and would hesitate to enter the roadway. |

Project 3: Research on the development of effective university-regional collaboration courses and projects based on an analysis of the impact of participation in regional collaboration activities on students’ attitudes
theme |
Research on the development of effective university-regional collaboration courses and projects based on the analysis of the impact of participation in regional cooperation activities on students’ awareness |
Principal Investigator |
Masanari Sakurai (Professor, Faculty of Policy Science, Ritsumeikan University) |
Outline of Research |
(Purpose of the study)
We will analyze in detail the (1) Gakumachi Collaboration Project, (2) Kyoto World Heritage PBL Courses, (3) Regional Collaborative Education Programs at Each University, and (4) Case Studies in Other Cities in Japan and Overseas in Detail from both the student and local perspectives, and clarify measures to improve both student learning and the impact on the community.
(Contents of the research)
(1) Analysis of the results of the Gakumachi Collaboration Project
(2) Analysis of Kyoto World Heritage PBL Courses: Pre- and Post-Awareness Survey through Student Questionnaires
(3) Analysis of community-based education programs at each university: Analysis of factors related to student learning and the impact of implementation on the community
(4) Analysis of case studies from other cities |

A Study on Insulation Renovation Methods Corresponding to Residential Culture in Kyomachiya |
Principal Investigator |
Osamu Doi (Researcher, Department of Architecture, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University) |
Outline of Research |
(Purpose of the study)
We will examine a thermal insulation renovation method that improves energy-saving performance while inheriting the residential culture of Kyomachiya, clarify its effects and issues for its dissemination, and propose design guidelines for insulation renovation that corresponds to the residential culture of Kyomachiya.
(Contents of the research)
(1) Survey of Kyomachiya that have not yet undergone insulation renovation
(2) Survey of Kyomachiya that underwent thermal insulation renovation on an experimental basis
(3) Based on the results of (1) and (2), we will sort out the issues for the spread of insulation renovation in Kyomachiya and consider design guidelines for insulation renovation that corresponds to residential culture. |

Achievement debriefing and networking events
In addition to holding a report meeting to widely disseminate and share the results of the five surveys and research projects adopted in fiscal 2015, we also held the following exchange meetings to promote exchanges between researchers beyond the boundaries of universities and laboratories, as well as between researchers and citizens, students, government officials, etc.
At the debriefing session, each researcher reported on the results of their surveys and research with enthusiasm.
At the networking event that followed, we looked back on the progress of this project over the past five years, and then went beyond the boundaries of research themes with a diverse range of participants, including researchers, civil servants, students, and NPOs, who had a frank discussion.
Thank you to everyone who participated.
