Theme: New Career Guidance Created through High School and University Collaboration
~To cultivate the ability to design the future by yourself~
Speaker: Takayuki Shioze (Associate Professor, Kyoto University)
The most important thing for students is to envision their own future. It is only when you draw yourself, not anyone else, that you become responsible for your own future. In order to cultivate the necessary skills for this purpose, it is necessary for educational institutions to work closely together to develop a comprehensive career guidance system and support career design.
Rather than the ability to choose an answer from among the options, the ability to create one’s own choices is required. The ability to create problems well is more important than the ability to solve problems well. However, under the current examination system, there is a limit to how much it is possible to cultivate these skills through subject guidance alone.
For better or worse, students are surrounded by options and information. A huge number of options are prepared before worrying, and each option is accompanied by the evaluation of others. The adults around him also impose time constraints and demand hasty choices. In other cases, even that choice is substituted for the student.
Naturally, job hunting, which greatly affects one’s future, requires a completely different decision from choosing an answer from the options of the National Center Examination. However, as if this were their first opportunity, there are not a few university and graduate students who are left and right in the face of a huge amount of information. What is necessary for career education is not only work experience and detailed information, but also the ability to make decisions on one’s own. It is the ability to read for oneself what is the choice and what is the information. High schools and universities should work closely together to create a new career guidance system that fosters the ability to envision their own future.
