Business Overview

The Kyoto International Student Film Festival is the largest international student film festival in Japan, planned and operated mainly by university students from the Kansai region, mainly in Kyoto. The aim is to collect independent films produced by students from all over the world and discover the talents and talents who will lead the future of cinema.
Historically, Kyoto is a “movie town” that still inherits the cultural heritage of the early days of Japan cinema, and it is also a “university town and student town” where students account for 10% of the population of Kyoto City. The festival aims to revitalize Kyoto by creating a place for international exchange and mutual understanding by discovering and introducing talents who can add new fields to cinema from among the many possibilities of films from around the world.

Takayoshi Oe
(Film director and screenwriter)

Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1981. Filmmaker. He majored in theater at University, studied the Lecoq system, a French acting system, from Mr. Ohashi, and after graduating, he continued to work on stage productions as a director and actor. After that, he started making films and worked as a director and screenwriter. The new film “Whale Bone” (23), directed and written, is being released in theaters nationwide from October 13, 2023. His films he has directed and written include “The Art of Beauty” (09) and “The Right Distance” (11). In dramas, he directed “You Fly in the Air After School” (18 / TBS Service, Toei) and “Because I’ll Forget Everything” (22 / Disney+). His screenplays include “Koi no Tsuki” (18 / TX), “Gannibal” (22 / Disney+), and “Wonder Hatch ~Island of the Flying Dragon~” (23 / Disney+). He co-wrote the film Drive My Car, and together with director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, he won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival, the Japan Academy Awards, and the Los Mr./Ms. Zels Film Critics Association Awards.

Junta Yamaguchi
(Film Director)

Born in 1987 in Osaka. In 2005, he participated in the European project. He is active as an all-in-one director who directs, shoots, and edits video content such as movies, dramas, commercials, and documentaries. “We at the Foot of Droste” (20) won awards at numerous international film festivals and was distributed in many countries. His latest film, “River, Don’t Flow” (23), which was shot entirely in Kifune, Kyoto, won the Special Prize at the 15th TAMA Film Awards. His other directorial works include the music video for Creep Hype, the drama series “He’s Good and I’m Bad” and “Don’t Spend Time, Lovers.”

Yuki Yamato
(Film Director)

Film director. In 2012, while studying philosophy at Sophia University, he directed “That Girl Dancing on the Beach” on his own. In 2016, the feature film “The Drowning Knife” starring Nana Komatsu and Masaki Sugata W attracted more than 600,000 viewers and became an unprecedented hit for a female director in her 20s. In 2018, she planned and produced her first omnibus film, “The Girl of the 21st Century,” which was screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival. In 2019, Hot Gimmick Girl Me Boy was released on Netflix in 190 countries around the world. In 2021, he composed and directed his first TV drama series for “Living, Dying, and Fathers.” He has worked on music videos for many artists such as RADWIMPS, Nogizaka46, and back number, as well as advertising videos for major companies, and has a reputation for fresh visual expression that transcends genres.

Implementation Report

The 26th edition of the festival was held at the Museum of Kyoto for three days from February 10 (Sat) ~ 12 (Mon, holiday), 2024, and was streamed online from February 17 (Sat) ~ 23 (Fri, holiday). This year, a total of 434 films were submitted, including 134 from Japan and 300 from overseas, and 16 selected films were screened.
At the award ceremony on the final day, the “Grand Prix” and “Second Grand Prix” were announced, as well as the “Final Jury Award” selected by this year’s final judges, directors Takayoshi Oe, Junta Yamaguchi, and Yuki Yamato, respectively, and the “Executive Committee Award” selected by the executive committee. Directors Oe and Yamaguchi presented their awards and gave general comments, and Yamato and others sent video messages.

Dong-woo decides to ignore his mother for the time being.

“Bloody Horror Screening: A Night of Horror at a Temple in Kyoto”
Date: Saturday, December 9, 2023
Venue: Mt. Choju Honshoji Temple
Contents: Filmmaker Takashi Shimizu and monster collector Hirokatsu Kihara were invited as guests to screen the 20th Film Festival’s award-winning film “Noise,” as well as guest director Takashi Shimizu’s “The Grudge” and Hirokatsu Kihara’s original story “Ghost Story.” After the screening, we held a talk show with two guests on the theme of the films to be screened. The results of the questionnaire were well received, and it was an opportunity to become interested in the Kyoto International Student Film Festival.

Details: At the Kyoto International Film Festival 2023 held at the Kyoto International Manga Museum, the Grand Prix winner of the 25th Kyoto International Student Film Festival, “Lunchbox”, was screened. After the screening, the executive committee members took the stage and talked about the screening film “Lunchbox”, their favorite movie, and the appeal of the film festival with the MC of Garage Sale Mr./Ms.. There was a lot of talk.

Tokyo Student Film Festival × Kyoto International Student Film Festival Collaboration Project

Content: Last year’s Grand Prize winner of the Kyoto International Student Film Festival, “Lunchbox,” was screened at the Tokyo Student Film Festival Screening in Monnaka Gatchan’s Theater. After the screening, we held a talk session with the executive committee members of the Tokyo Student Film Festival on the theme of “student films.”
