Implementation Report
The 24th FD Forum Report [Click here for details]
On March 2~3, 2019, the 24th FD Forum “Diversity in Universities” was held at Ritsumeikan University’s Kinugasa Campus.
The FD Forum, hosted by the University Consortium Kyoto, has been held since 1995 with the aim of improving the quality of higher education and disseminating information on FD activities from Kyoto, and this year marks the 24th time.
Against the backdrop of major changes in the structure of society as a whole, such as the further decline in the 18-year-old population and the advent of the “100-year lifespan era,” there is a need for diversity in universities, such as accepting diverse students such as working adults and international students, assigning diverse faculty members, and organizing diverse and flexible educational programs.
Therefore, the overall theme of this year’s symposium was “Diversity in Universities,” and two symposiums were held on the first day, “How to face the diversity of people gathered at universities” and “Relearning” and university education for working adults, and on the second day, breakout sessions on 11 diverse themes.
A total of 693 university faculty members and educators from all over Japan gathered to report on the results of research on improving education, share practices, and engage in lively discussions.
On the first day, at the symposium (1) “How to Deal with the Diversity of People at Universities,” four speakers took the stage: Dr. Ousby Sako (President, Kyoto Seika University), Dr. Yoharu Hidaka (Professor, Faculty of Nursing, Takarazuka University), Ms. Kako Akatachi (Lecturer, Abuyama Gakuen, Osaka Municipal Children’s Independence Support Facility), and Ms. Megumi Matsunami (Researcher, Center for Survival Studies, Ritsumeikan University). In the symposium (2) “Re-learning and University Education for Working Adults,” four speakers took the stage: Yuki Inaga (Lecturer, University Research Center, University of Tsukuba), Masamitsu Nozawa (Vice President, Rikkyo University / Vice President, Rikkyo Second Stage University), Tadakatsu Okada (Assistant to the President, Kansai University / Professor, Faculty of Human Health), and Satoshi Hirai (Secretary General, General Affairs Department, Ritsumeikan Educational Corporation). In the panel discussion that followed, there was a lively discussion between the speakers and participants.
On the second day, we held breakout sessions on 11 themes that are of high interest to university educators. In the poster session held at the same time, a total of 17 “Educational Practice Examples” were exhibited from the Kyoto Consortium of Universities, and many participants stopped to listen to the explanations of the person in charge, and actively asked questions.
