FY 2017

Business Overview

As an organizational effort for faculty members to improve and enhance their teaching content and methods, the University Consortium Kyoto has been promoting FD activities in the Kyoto area together with member universities since 1995, shortly after its establishment.
The FD Joint Training Program for New Teachers is a training program that complies with the “Standard Framework for New Teachers” proposed by the National Institute for Educational Policy Research with the aim of equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary for university teachers.

In 2015, we expanded the scope of participation to include part-time faculty members at member schools.
In addition, although the program name is “newly appointed faculty member,” there is no limit on the number of years of service because it is a program that is useful for teachers at all career stages.
It is possible to participate on only one of the two consecutive days, but due to the structure of the program, we recommend that you participate for two days.

【Information】
From 2018, we plan to make significant changes to the program format (schedule, program structure, awarding of certificates of completion, etc.).

Implementation Report

This year, Program A was held on Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17, and Program B was held on Saturday, February 17 and Sunday, February 18, with 9 participants from 5 universities participating in Program A and 13 participants from 7 universities in Program B.

Program A

[Training Day 1]
First, Dr. Jun Murata of Kyoto University gave a workshop on “Basic Knowledge and Workshop for Learning Support and Special Needs.” In the lecture, he talked about “what is disability”, “the current state of support for students with disabilities at universities”, and “understanding and supporting students with developmental disabilities”. In the workshop, participants worked in pairs and gave one person a piece of paper on which to draw a shape, conveyed the figure only with words, and the other person drew a figure using only the words they heard.

Next, Prof. Hitomi Asada of Kacho Junior College and Prof. Hiroko Hasegawa of Ikebo Junior College gave a workshop on “Basic Knowledge and Lesson Design.” In the lecture, the importance of creating a syllabus to make the credit system work was explained, and in the workshop, the participants actually re-set the “achievement goals” and “grading method” of the syllabus created by each participant from different perspectives and rewrote them appropriately.

[Training Day 2]
On the second day of the training, Professor Shinji Matsumoto of Bukkyo University gave a lecture titled “Career Development of FD and University Teachers.” He explained the importance of FD while taking up recent trends in higher education, including the report of the Central Education Council.

Next, Dr. Akiko Nozaki of Kyoto University of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences gave a workshop on “Basic Knowledge and Workshop for Learner-Centered Class Management.”
While demonstrating the content of the lectures he was teaching, he explained a method of active learning in which he asks questions to students, as well as evaluation based on rubrics. In the workshop, the participants were divided into groups to decide on a theme, create questions for the students on that theme, and then experience creating a rubric.

At the end of the two-day training, four participants who participated in all the programs of Program A were awarded certificates of participation.

Program B

[Training Day 1]
The event began with an “icebreaker” by Professor Akinori Shinnaga of Kyoto Gakuen University. In addition to introducing himself, he shared that he would like to take on new challenges next year and that he is struggling to prepare for next year. Through the icebreaker, they talked with smiles and talked in a friendly atmosphere.

After the icebreaker, Akira Mawatari, Deputy Secretary General of the University Consortium Kyoto, gave a lecture titled “Kyoto City of Universities and Universities in Kyoto.” After an explanation of the various projects of the University Consortium Kyoto, the students used worksheets to introduce the founding spirit and educational philosophy of their own university and the university they graduated from, as well as the temperament of the students, and to deepen their understanding.

As the third program, Professor Kazuharu Abe of Kyoto Koka Women’s University gave a workshop on lesson design. After an explanation of how to use the mandalat, the students actually experienced the mandalat using the worksheets, and then divided into groups to work on the theme of “what is a good lesson for students?”

[Training Day 2]
First, following the “Workshop for Lesson Design” on the previous day, Professor Kazuharu Abe of Kyoto Koka Women’s University gave a “Classroom Practical Workshop”. After the opening explanation, the students were divided into two groups and each student had a 15-minute mock class. Participants exchanged comments on the good points of the mock class, selected the best class, and each group made a presentation to the whole group, and the whole group reviewed it.

As the final program, Professor Manabu Fujiwara of Ryukoku University gave a lecture on “Basic Knowledge for Lesson Design.” Under the theme of “What is a good grade evaluation?”, he explained the explanation of grading and the points to note regarding the setting of grading criteria for better grading, giving specific examples of evaluation methods for sports and competitions regarding academic ability. In the workshop, we used worksheets to discuss the problems and causes of the easy winning subjects.

At the end of the training, certificates of completion were presented to three students who completed all programs of the new faculty FD Joint Training ≪Program A≫ and ≪Program B≫ and certificates of participation were presented to eight people who participated in the two-day program.
