FY2020

Business Overview

Since its establishment in 1995, shortly after its establishment, the University Consortium Kyoto has been promoting FD activities in the Kyoto region together with member schools as an organizational initiative for faculty members to improve and enhance their teaching content and methods.

This FD Joint Training Program is a small-group training program for all faculty and staff of universities and junior colleges with the aim of acquiring basic knowledge of FD, syllabus creation, lesson design and practice, active learning, grade evaluation, and other skills necessary for university teachers. It is intended for all university and junior college faculty and staff.

In fiscal 2020, a total of six sessions will be held online (Zoom). In addition, due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, many universities are conducting online classes, and we will touch on the content of online classes in each part of this training program.

In this program, participants will first receive information about the University Consortium Kyoto and the FD training opportunities it provides. Next, we will confirm the basic knowledge about FD. On top of that, you will have the opportunity to experience how to practice teaching using facilitation and think about what a learner-centered class looks like.

Overview “Basic Knowledge for Learning Support and Special Needs”

Lecturer: Jun Murata (Associate Professor, Student Support Center, Kyoto University)

In recent years, the number of students has become more diverse, and there is a wide demand for study support for various students. In particular, with regard to support for students with disabilities, the enactment of the Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities has made it a legal obligation or obligation for each university to prohibit unfair discriminatory treatment of students with disabilities and to provide reasonable accommodation.

In this training, you will first learn basic knowledge about “disability” and then give an overview of the current situation of support for students with disabilities at universities. In addition, it will be an opportunity to think about the basic knowledge of support and specific measures for learning support for students with developmental disabilities, which has been increasing in recent years.

The syllabus plays an important role in ensuring a well-planned lesson. The items and contents that should be included in the syllabus are also diversifying. In this training, we will focus on the syllabus and consider the basic concepts and points to keep in mind regarding lesson design. In addition, through workshops, students will learn specifically about the consistency of higher-level educational policies and goals, such as curriculum policies (CPs) and diploma policies (DP), with individual subjects and classes.

Overview “Learner-Centered Classroom Workshop”

Lecturer: Yui Ohara (Lecturer, Faculty of Sociology, Otani University) Mieko Sawada (Professor, Department of Fundamental Sciences, Kyoto Institute of Technology)

Regardless of the field or field, from the perspective of independent learning, there is a need to shift from one-way knowledge transfer classes, which have been common in the past, to learner-centered classes. “Active learning” is considered to be one of them. In this training, we will take up active learning and learn about the expected effects and problems. In addition, through workshops, we will create and peer-evaluate actual lesson design plans that incorporate active learning. Especially this year, we would be grateful if we could exchange information on how to ensure independent learning in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Application deadline: Tuesday, November 24, 2020

Date 6:
Saturday , January 16, 2021 14:00~16:00
Overview “Lesson Design and Lesson Practice Workshop”

Lecturer: Satoshi Nagano (Associate Professor, Faculty of Industrial Sociology, Ritsumeikan University) Naoko Yoshida (Lecturer, Department of Early Childhood Care, Ikebo Junior College)

As we move away from one-way lectures to student-centered, active learning, it’s more important than ever for instructors to design their lessons in detail. In addition, due to the recent impact of the new coronavirus, online classes are being implemented nationwide. Therefore, in this training, you will deepen your understanding of the basic concepts of lesson design and examples of design methods (lectures, exercises, practical training, etc.). In addition, participants will conduct group work on Good Points and Improvement Points on specific lesson design.

Application deadline : Saturday, January 9, 2021, 5:00 p.m.

* There is an application deadline for each session, but if the capacity is reached, the application will be closed before the application deadline. If there are any remaining seats, we will accept applications even after the application deadline.

Implementation Report

This year, under the themes of “Basic Knowledge of FD,” “Support for Students with Disabilities,” “Syllabus Creation and Grading,” “Lesson Design and Lesson Practice,” “Active Learning,” and “Online Classes,” this training program focused on the concerns and issues faced by universities and individuals amid the coronavirus pandemic, and provided opportunities for case reports, topics, and information sharing.
This year, due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, all sessions were held online (Zoom meetings), and a total of 81 people (in total) participated from all over the country.
In the question of satisfaction in the participant questionnaire, the average of the responses of “satisfied” and “somewhat satisfied” was about 97%, which was high for all six times.
The factors that led to the high evaluation were the use of the breakout session function of Zoom meetings to conduct group work that was previously conducted face-to-face every year, and the use of the online whiteboard tool “Miro” to create group work that can only be done online.
In addition, in the free text of the participant questionnaire, “I understood the basic concept of FD that I had vaguely understood until now” (1st session), “I was able to learn about examples of online classes and new functions of Microsoft Teams, and I was able to acquire knowledge and skills that can be used immediately” (2nd session), “I learned a lot because I am involved in a support project for students with disabilities” (3rd session), and ” I was able to receive direct comments on what I should and don’t need to fix in my syllabus, which gave me confidence in creating syllabi and classes in the future” (4th session), “I was able to learn about the actual efforts of each university” (5th session), “It was helpful to introduce examples and methods of designing classes. I would like to use it in the future if I have the opportunity” (6th session).
In the future, we will continue to aim to implement training programs that meet the needs of participants.
