Theme: Quality Assurance of University Education in the 21st Century: The Ideal Direction
Overview Today, universities around the world are growing their student population at an annual rate of 5%. On the other hand, the number of university students in Japan seems to be on a downward trend. On the other hand, in terms of the quality of university education, the 21st century is following a different direction from the 20th century. In other words, it is a shift from the homogeneous, mass-production-oriented “artificial plantation-type education” of the 20th century to the “wood-based education” of the 21st century, which fosters diverse global human resources with an emphasis on “individuality.” What kind of methods, structures, and operations are required for “wood-based education” to establish “individuality”?

Implementation Report

On Saturday, June 25, 2016, the University Consortium Kyoto held the “2016 Kyoto FD Executive School.”

A total of 39 participants, mainly from the presidents of the 50 member universities and other members of the university executive committee, were invited to give a lecture titled “Quality Assurance of University Education in the 21st Century: The Ideal Direction” by Akita International University President Norihiko Suzuki.
Using the Erasmus Programme and MOOCs as examples, he talked about the qualitative transformation of undergraduate education that can be seen from the problems faced by universities in Japan today, based on the premise that alignment between universities is spreading all over the world and that Japan universities will have no choice but to do so around 2030.

In the post-event questionnaire from the participants, we received comments such as “The talk was very helpful not only in Japan but also in the world,” “I learned a lot because the content was about the problems we are currently facing,” and “The content of the lecture was clear and easy to understand.”
