Since 2016, the Consortium of Universities in Kyoto has been collaborating with Kyoto City to further promote university-wide regional collaboration initiatives by implementing the “Gakumachi Collaborative University” promotion project, which supports universities that are working to develop and implement practical educational programs in which students learn through activities in collaboration with local residents’ organizations, civic activity groups, local companies, and shopping districts. The project will be implemented for 4 years from FY2016~FY2019.
The following six universities have been certified as selected universities for the “Academic Town Collaborative Universities” Promotion Project.
List of Selected Universities
Otani University
Based on the results of the “Nakagawa School District Life Discovery Project” and the “Community Information Dissemination Project” (Otani University Happy Hour at RADIO mix KYOTO) in Kita-ku, Kyoto City, which were established in 2015, and child-rearing support projects, the “University-Community Collaboration Project centered on the Kita-ku and Kitaoji areas” We will carry out the following:
Through this project, we will promote initiatives in cooperation with Mr./Ms.local residents, NPOs, local companies, shops, etc., under the themes of “child-rearing support,” “dissemination of local information,” and “tourism promotion.”
Kyoto University of Education
Students in the teacher training course will interview and edit the charms of Kyoto’s geography, history, literature, life, and art for elementary and junior high school students, and make it into a three-minute video. We plan to create useful content that can be used for classes in each subject at elementary and junior high schools, as well as for preparatory learning for students visiting Kyoto from all over Japan.
Utilizing the experience cultivated in teacher training lectures, we aim to produce 150 petit contents in three years, while keeping in mind the content structure and terminology of videos that can be understood by elementary and junior high school students.
Kyoto Women’s University
At Kyoto Women’s University, we have been working closely with the local community and taking advantage of the characteristics of a women’s university to accumulate steady collaborative activities that focus on daily life issues such as child-rearing, education, support for the elderly, and support for neighborhood association activities. Expanding on this achievement, we will position collaborative activities in the curriculum and build a “Regional Women’s Training Program” that aims to develop human resources who can become female regional leaders with the ability to identify local issues, solve problems, and have practical skills.
As a first step, in 2017, we will offer “Regional and Industry-Academia Collaboration Courses” for all faculties and all grades, which systematize introductory courses to theoretically learn the social significance of collaborative activities and collaborative courses that promote students’ active participation in activities. In addition to conventional activities, we will develop a wide range of collaborative activities both inside and outside the regular curriculum, such as support for safe and secure urban development and industry support in Kyoto.
In addition, we will form the “Kyojo Roundtable” together with the contracting organizations, aiming to serve as a node that creates exchanges between governments, companies, and citizens.
Kyoto Tachibana University
Based on the achievements of regional cooperation that have been built up in the Yamashina and Daigo regions so far, we aim to develop seven educational programs with three core issues so that students can “resonate” with the community, be trained in the community, and grow as human resources who can contribute to the community. They cover a wide range of fields, from humanities and social sciences to nursing, medical care, health, and welfare. In addition to the long-standing projects for discovering local culture and promoting the local economy and community development in Yamashina Ward, as well as collaborating with Kyoto City and the Housing Complex Residents’ Association in the Daigo Nakayama Housing Complex in Fushimi Ward, this project will be used as an opportunity to establish a “satellite” of the Regional Cooperation Center in the vicinity of Yamashina Station, secure a base for student activities, and create a system for the community and students to “grow together.” In addition, in response to important issues in modern society, such as support for the elderly and child-rearing, we will launch new programs in the fields of nursing, medical care, and health and welfare, and the entire university will work together to solve regional issues.
Doshisha Women’s University
Since 2004, the “Machiya Course” at Kyomachiya, which has been continuously held at the university, will be further developed by collaborating and integrating with a series of educational programs inside and outside the university’s regular curriculum, and will be reborn as a community-based educational program that develops from multiple fields through interaction with local residents and collaboration with museums.
Students will grasp the historical process and current situation of Kyoto from the perspective of “Kyoto Studies” from a wide range of fields that cross faculties and departments, such as history, geography, education, literature, and tourism, and will learn independently and interactively with the local community through fieldwork in Kyoto City and workshops with local residents. Through such a program, we aim to disseminate proposals for the future from the perspective of female university students on urban development of a disaster-resistant community-based cooperative society based on the experience of reconstruction support education.
Ryukoku University
-Aiming to realize “community-based learning” where students and the community learn together-
Taking advantage of the characteristics of the southern part of Kyoto City, centered on Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, where Ryukoku University’s Fukakusa Campus is located, we aim to build a community-based learning (CBL) that allows students and communities to learn together and build a relationship of mutual trust through multi-generational and multicultural exchange.
In order to implement many CBL projects through regular and extracurricular activities, we will expand and organize the diverse seeds of regional collaboration that we have already accumulated in the fields of regular curricular, extracurricular, research, and community contribution, and build a “Regional Collaboration Seeds Bank” that connects both the needs of educational programs and the needs of the community.
In addition, we will actively carry out educational projects related to CBL, give as many students as possible an opportunity to make their regional debut, and support students who actively participate in regional cooperation activities.
Interim Evaluation Results of the “Academic City Collaborative University” Promotion Project
The “Academic City Collaborative University” Promotion Project, which started in 2016, has a support period of four years until 2019, but in the third year, 2018, an interim evaluation by external experts will be conducted, and the interim evaluation was conducted on July 28. The evaluation results are as follows.

- The fact that the university-wide common courses were started ahead of schedule and that many students are participating in various projects is commendable, but it is necessary to promptly implement those for which specific improvement measures are known.
- It is necessary to verify the degree of contribution of various initiatives, including the production of radio programs, to the local community, and to further disseminate the results.
- I hope that efforts will continue to be made not only for the faculty or seminars, but also for the entire university under the strong leadership of the president.

- There is a wide range of fields in which regional cooperation is being developed, and the characteristics of the university are being utilized. In addition, we have been able to involve students in the initiatives, and in addition to seeing some initiatives that have significantly exceeded the target for the number of participating students, we can also appreciate the fact that the efforts are widely disseminated using social media.
