FY 2018

In collaboration with Kyoto City, the Foundation will widely disseminate examples of collaboration between universities and students and local communities in the city, and will hold the “University and Regional Cooperation Summit” as an opportunity for universities, students, and local organizations involved in regional collaboration activities to interact.

On the day of the event, there will be case studies presentations by universities that have been selected for the “Academic City Collaborative Universities” Promotion Project, keynote speeches by guests, and poster sessions (panel presentations and exchanges of opinions) by universities, students, and local organizations engaged in university-regional collaboration activities in Kyoto City.

Event Report

On Sunday, December 2, 2018, the 2018 “University and Regional Collaboration Summit” was held at Campus Plaza Kyoto. In the first part, Mr. Mitsuhiro Yamazaki, former International Business Development Officer of the City of Portland Development Bureau, was invited to give a lecture on the theme of “Community Design and Livable Urban Spaces ~ From the Case of Portland.”

In the 1950s-70s, Portland had the most polluted rivers and air in the United States due to industrial pollution and car-centric road design, and many residents moved to the suburbs, turning the city center into an empty ghost town. From such a state of abyss, the first goal was to preserve the natural environment, and the government and industry worked together to rebuild the city, and it was able to transform into a city that is now said to be the most desirable city to live in in the United States. He told the story that the secret to his success was to raise the slogan “Cherish nature” that anyone from any position can achieve.

After the end of the second part, a social gathering was held for poster session presenters. With Mr. Shinichi Asakura, Kyoto City Urban Development Advisor, as a facilitator, based on the overall theme of the 2018 Summit, “The Future of Creative and Sustainable ‘Towns’,” we randomly combined keywords of our own interest and came up with ideas that could be used for urban development. In a friendly atmosphere, it was a good opportunity for the students to learn the importance of creating new things with free ideas and the importance of having a creative mind.
